What Makes Children Read

As I was looking up information on what makes a child a strong reader, I came upon this wonderful article by Elizabeth Grice. Ms. Grice after interviewing a teacher quoted him as stating that "Between the ages of four and nine," he says, "reading books is regarded as optional. Some schools take it seriously, but others say there is no time and fall back on worksheets which are torn-up extracts of books. It is really dangerous. Children don't even read the whole chapter. The idea of engaging with what happens, with the thoughts and feelings of a story, has disappeared"

If you have a few moments, please read this completed article by Ms. Grice. Not only is this an engaging article, but it may change how you look at reading with young children.
